tips for the best pictures
When shooting architecture, buildings, and designs with a cellphone, it can be a challenge to capture the details, scale, and steadiness of structures, especially when you’re working with a limited tool. However, there are several techniques you can use to make sure your photos turn out great, even with just your phone!
Stabilize Your Phone
Use a tripod or stabilizer: If you don’t have one, you can stabilize your phone by holding it with both hands, keeping your elbows tucked into your body, and leaning against something solid, like a wall or railing. You can also use the phone’s timer or a remote shutter.

Student Work

Site Visits/Trades Days
Understand Lighting
Golden Hour: Early mornings or late afternoons (golden hour) provide the best light for architectural photography. Avoid Harsh Sunlight: Direct midday sunlight can create harsh contrasts and overly dark shadows.

Background Visuals
Using rule of thirds
Place key elements (like eyes, horizons, or subjects) along these lines or at their intersections to create a more balanced, natural-looking photo. Most phones allow you to turn on the grid by turning it on in Settings > Camera > Grid.
Icons
To visually represent the mission of the ACE Mentor Program, we’ve created a custom set of icons that reflect key aspects of the AEC industry and our program’s impact. These icons bring clarity, consistency, and a fresh energy to our brand communications. Whether you’re highlighting mentorship, career paths, or industry skills, these graphics are designed to support storytelling across digital and print platforms.
